From Sugar Junkie to Thought Leader and Mentor to Thousands
Joanne was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where she lived till the age of sixteen. She then moved with her family to the island of Jersey in the British Channel Isles. Joanne was a junk-food addict for twelve years, which left her obese, depressed, and frequently unwell. After years of secret eating, bingeing, and believing she was “just meant to be fat” Joanne eventually triumphed. She found the strength to take the first steps in transforming her life and ultimately she lost 63 pounds – four and a half stone, reducing from a size 20 to a size 10. Over time, she transformed her mindset, her body, and her life. Joanne has kept all that weight off for thirty years.
In October 1986, Joanne founded her Slimming Together programme. Since then, she has personally mentored tens of thousands of people in the UK and Southern California in transforming their lives, and has reached over a million more as a regular columnist for The Sunday Post Magazine (DC Thomson). Over the past twenty years, Joanne has worked and trained with some remarkable people including Patrick Holford, Dan Millman, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Yasuhiko Genku Kimura and the Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee.
Joanne practises an approach to life she calls respectful living, and her simple yet powerful teachings are grounded in common sense. She has guided many to release the guilt, shame and pain that exist at the core of eating disorders and other self-defeating behaviour patterns: She teaches practical ways to develop inner-strength, authentic confidence, and a healthy sense of self-worth.
Joanne has been a vegetarian for more than twenty years. She gave up chocolate on her 40th birthday in 2002 and hasn’t touched it since. She has a low-wheat, low-dairy diet, and rarely eats sugar.
Joanne enjoys yoga, swimming, and power-walking. She loves learning and she greatly enjoys musical theatre – she loves to sing and dance – she adores being with her family and friends.
Joanne is married to Zak, and together they love nature, animals, and long walks on the beach and through country trails.
